As a Special Educator (1st Grade Inclusion) who works with reading intervention, phonics is "my thing!" I absolutely ♥ teaching sounds and spellings using a variety of modalities.

I'm dropping in to share a favorite phonics freebie 

I have had success using with my first graders:

For every phonics sound/spelling (we  mostly follow Open Court's scope and sequence), 

I use self-checking picture/text cards with my small groups. I have my students 

apply their new skills to read the text word  and then they use the picture 

to check their work ("Does it look right?"  "Does it sound right?" 

"Does it make sense?")

I simply cover the pictures with sticky notes (or even your hand).

Phonics Freebie

This is Jennifer from Positively Learning

I'm a Special Educator (1st Grade Inclusion) in an inner city elementary school and I absolutely ♥ what I do! My students keep me incredibly busy as they all have different areas of strengths and needs. One thing they all have in common? They benefit from hands-on activities!

In addition to providing special education services in all content areas, a good portion of my teaching day involves reading intervention. I teach Power Hour (a Guided Reading model) daily and pull additional groups focused on phonemic awareness, sight words, and phonics instruction. This year I've also had the pleasure of tackling Close Reading and intensive decoding strategies with 3rd graders needing extra support.

Our school uses a variety of resources, including Reading Mastery and Leveled Literacy Instruction (Fountas & Pinnell), but sometimes we need additional support with interactive hands-on learning.

I'm sharing a freebie we used this past week:

I start off using the picture/text cards during Guided Practice and as soon as my students are ready, I release the activities to partner-pairs. The visual supports (pictures, color-coding, & engaging graphics) help solidify learning and provides an opportunity for self-checking.
